We would like to announce a special issue of the Journal of Scheduling "Scheduling: new branches, old roots" dedicated to the memory of Vyacheslav Sergeevich Tanaev (28.03.1940 - 19.07.2002) on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Vyacheslav Tanaev was the initiator and a great supporter of studies in scheduling and related areas in the USSR and the post-Soviet countries. His monographs, published in Russian and English, remain a permanent source of some of the most important results in scheduling theory and its applications. The topics outlined in this special issue are inspired by his contributions to the scheduling research literature and include, but are not limited to: - New concepts in scheduling with soft and hard time constraints - Interactions of scheduling theory with other disciplines such as graph theory, mathematical programming, combinatorics - The coordination and integration of scheduling decisions in supply and production chains - Scheduling in uncertain environments - Closing gaps in the complexity of scheduling problems. We also intend to prepare a survey of the scientific activities of Vyacheslav Tanaev and his contributions to scheduling theory and research in general. Submissions should be uploaded directly at the JoS web page http://www.editorialmanager.com/josh/ in the Section devoted to this issue.
