General presentation

The LIFL is the computer science department of Lille's Science and Technology University (USTL). It was founded in 1983 and has been continuously expanding ever since. Its staff presently comprises 200 members - 90 lecturers and professors, 30 technicians and administratives -, and 80 PhD students. The research at the LIFL is enhanced by researchers and projects of CNRS and INRIA, the two major French research institutions in computer science:

CNRS supports the LIFL since its creation in 1983, in terms of a mixed research unit (UMR USTL/CNRS8022) which belongs to the CNRS department of Information and Engineering Sciences and Technologies (ST2I) ,
INRIA: LIFL is in partnership with the Research Center "INRIA LNE" around 8 common Teams- projects.

Regionally, the LIFL cooperates with the research institutes IRI and IRCICA created in 2002 respectively 2001 with participation of the LIFL.

IRCICA is Lille's research institute for soft and hardware components in information and advanced communication,
IRI is Lille's interdisciplinary research institute investigating the structure, dynamics and robustness of cellular regulatory networks, in the context of multifactorial diseases.

The LIFL has numerous other industrial and academic partners on the international, national, and regional levels. The LIFL is already the most important computer science research institute in the North of France. In the near future, it aims at creating a center of excellence in computer science with its regional and national partners.
